One of the cool releases this year that you might’ve missed is “Music for broken elevators” by the French/UK band !GeRald!. We have talked about them before here and their previous release, “.The Lost Tapes.”, which I still highly recommend. This time, the band has returned with a shorter, but just as engaging release. Just by looking at the wacky cover art (done by Vincent Zlotkowski) you can sense the bizarre nature of the EP.

We start off with ‘The blissful little life of Frank Bigbof.’, where we get to experience a wide range of what !GeRald! has to offer in roughly 6 minutes – it’s funky, noisy, energetic and unpredictable. The big surprise is in the next song, ‘The short way home.’, where we get some lyrics, which is a first! Are they as abstract as the instrumental – you bet. The third song is my favorite, even just by its name, ‘Glory Whole.’. It’s very dynamic and fast-paced, holds your attention from start to finish.

Up next we have ‘Letter to Sandrine.’ – the catchiest track on the record. Halfway through it we finally get some of the elevator music that the title of the EP promises, or at least the kind of elevator music you’d typically expect. It also has a very, very high-quality video to it! Here you can watch some corporate monster fish shenanigans while enjoying the music:

“Don’t walk away”, we hear, as we end our short journey with the last track – ‘Atmosphere.’

Overall, “Music for broken elevators” is more lighthearted compared to !GeRald!’s other work so far, but that doesn’t make it any less good. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but at the same time there isn’t a moment where the silliness overtakes and feels too much. Everything is well balanced, which makes this EP so enjoyable and the perfect “entrée” for the new listeners.
