John Macaluso opening the second day at Prog Metal Mania in Munich! 3rd May 2025

John Macaluso

John Macaluso’s set at Prog Metal Mania wasn’t exactly a masterclass but rather a unique showcase of classic songs from his extensive career. The performance featured Macaluso playing live on his drum kit while the rest of the instruments were played via playback.

What made the set especially engaging was the camera positioned above his kit, projecting a live feed on a big screen beside him. This gave drum enthusiasts a rare bird’s-eye view of his technique and precision. Throughout the show, Macaluso shared stories and anecdotes from his long and varied career, adding a personal touch with his jokes and interactions with the audience.

Despite a few technical hiccups that caused a slight delay, the show continued smoothly and offered a refreshing, different kind of set in the festival lineup, a celebration of one of progressive metal’s legendary drummers in a relaxed, intimate format.
