Obsidious live at Prog Metal Mania in Munich! 2nd May 2025
Obsidious
Obsidious are regularly hailed as one of the must-see acts within the progressive technical death metal scene, and I get it. Their precision, their polished sound, the sheer virtuosity of their playing it’s simply undeniable. While their style isn't exactly my cup of tea, I absolutely recognize the incredible quality of their work and understand why they were one of the most anticipated acts at Prog Metal Mania 2025.
From the moment they stepped on stage, it was clear why this band is considered a benchmark in tech-death. Guitarist Rafael Trujillo is simply a wonder to watch live! Absolute mastery of his instrument. The whole band delivered a rock-solid performance with an intense energy that resonated with the crowd from start to finish. Vocals were powerful and dynamic, perfectly riding the complexity of their music.
Worth mentioning, the band played with a substitute bass player from Panzer Ballet, who stepped in for their regular bassist who couldn't make it. He did an impressive job fitting in seamlessly with the band’s tight and complex sound.
The only slight downside was the sound at the beginning. It felt just a bit too loud and unbalanced during the first couple of songs. Worth noting: it wasn’t handled by the festival’s sound wizard, Niels Jensen (known for his magic at Ayreon shows and ProgPower Europe, among others). Thankfully, the issue was corrected quickly, and once it was smoothed out, the performance hit full gear and delivered exactly what the crowd came for: excellence.
This was a set that showed why Obsidious stands tall in the modern prog tech-death space: focused, intense, and executed with surgical precision.
