Art Against Agony - Sound of Inevitability
Ending the year in style with 1 ½ hours of mind blowing Instrumental Avantgarde Fusion Metal: enigmatic collective Art Against Agony put forward their magnum opus “Sound of Inevitability”, where they at least partly return to their Jazz Metal roots after a foray into completely electronic realms with their 2020 “Solanaceae” EP. Opening with a quadruple onslaught before revisiting the “Shiva Appreciation Society” motif from ‘The Queen’s Lullaby’ in ‘Honey Cake Whores’ and then dipping their toes into the electronic side of things again with ‘Squirrel’ and ‘Salience Bias’. The centerpiece ‘Hindsight Bias’ manages to unite all three main sound ingredients (Jazz/Fusion, Electronica and Metal) in exemplary, unexpected fashion. But the best is yet to come! The two multi-part suites ‘His Daughters Eyes’ and ‘Alteration, Iteration, Alliteration’ easily blow away everything that came before and forcefully put themselves forward as Art Against Agony’s most accomplished compositions to date. An exhilarating journey with mind blowing performances from guitar wizard the_sorcerer, the_maximalist on the Mridangam with hands flying faster than light, monster drummer the_malkavian, guest flutist Aralee Dorough (what an excellent addition!) and probably some more accomplished players from the collective. A strong beginning (including the perfect single ‘She Who Thirsts’), an experimental middle part and a final third of epic proportions – it is indeed inevitable that the “Sound of Inevitability” will go down as one of the best Experimental Metal albums of 2023.
