North of South – The Dogma and the Outsider EP

North of South’s new EP “The Dogma and the Outsider” is a release I can surely recommend. A varied record that includes collaborations with names like Kobi Farhi (Orphaned Land), Anna Murphy (Cellar Darling , ex- Eluvetie) and Zuberoa Aznárez (Diabulus in Musica). I find several elements on their music, if developed in the right direction, could help the band get established as one to keep an eye on for the future.

Scarlet Stories – Necrologies

Scarlet Stories is not overtly technical prog, even though the talent of the musicians is very much noticeable, their focus seems to be on melodies, moods and atmosphere, as well as a very strong inclination to bring the listener into their mysterious world, through the medium of music and lyricism. It very much feels like “Necrologies” could be the soundtrack to a collection of fantastic and gothic novels by Stoker, Shelley or Poe.

Iapetus – The Body Cosmic

With their sophomore album, Iapetus are wearing their influences quite openly without blatantly copying them, and they’ve managed to assemble a musical journey through their cosmos, packed full of grand, epic sections and also many restrained, contemplative passages, showing their aptitude at controlling dynamics and pacing. Quite a great listen from start to finish!
