Canadian Avantgarde Prog Metal quartet Maitreya premieres epic new single Utopian Plague
Canadian progressive avantgarde metal quartet Maitreya premieres their new single, “Utopian Plague,” on March 23, 2026, followed by a headline show at the Biltmore Theatre in Oshawa on March 28.
Built around the tension in its title, “Utopian Plague” explores the paradox of technological progress. The promise of advancement alongside the erosion of attention and creative depth. Musically, the track moves through contrasting terrain, shifting from Latin-inflected passages to dense, heavy sections and baroque-inspired transitions before closing in an expansive guitar finale.
The song is the band’s first fully self-produced release, recorded and mixed in-house, and their longest composition to date. Structured in evolving chapters, it unfolds through dynamic shifts in harmony, rhythm, and orchestration.
The band explains:
“If you follow the rising pitch and movement, you can hear the story progressing. It’s meant to be absorbed… ideally with the lyrics in hand.”
The single artwork features a Renaissance architectural painting by Giovanni Paolo Panini, underscoring the band’s focus on craft and discipline.
The March 28 headline performance will present the new material in a tightly integrated live setting, blending synchronized lighting, orchestration layers, and the physical catharsis of metal performance. The show will be captured on video and audio as part of this release cycle.
“Live performance is where everything comes together. The show is immersive and intense.”
says the band.
