International prog collective Fomalhaut premieres new single Hourglass I

Fomalhaut is a progressive metal band that emerged in 2006 when four college friends in Beijing united their passion for music. Drawing inspiration from genre titans like Dream Theater and Symphony X, they developed a distinctive sound that fuses the intricate textures of progressive metal with Asian influences.  After graduation in 2010, the band’s members pursued opportunities overseas, leading to an extended hiatus. A decade later, in 2021, Fomalhaut reignited their creative flame through remote collaborations. Their rebirth was further elevated by the addition of renowned musician Xiyu “Humbug” Yang (The Sound of Things Falling) who joined as producer, arranger, and bassist.

Following the two single releases ‘Kar (雪)’ (2022) and “Daugher of the Sky’ (2024), Fomalhaut is now ready to unveil their brand new single, ‘Hourglass I’

‘Hourglass I’ is Fomalhaut’s exploration of modern, tech-driven progressive metal, infused with a rich tapestry of influences. Originally conceived during the band’s early days by drummer Can “Volcano” Tang, the track began as an experimental fusion of post-rock and cinematic soundscapes. Over the years, it has undergone several transformations, evolving into its latest form: a dynamic piece that bridges classical composition, Chinese ethnic music, and the cutting-edge energy of contemporary prog metal.

Following the passing of jazz legend Chick Corea, the band found inspiration to honor his legacy within the song, weaving in tributes to him and other cultural heritage influences. With its intricate arrangements and deeply emotive layers, ‘Hourglass I’ captures the spirit of innovation and reverence that defines Fomalhaut’s music.

This is more than a song: it’s a journey through time, culture, and sound – crafted to resonate with the hearts of modern progressive metal enthusiasts.

Check out the exclusive premiere of ‘Hourglass I’ right here, two days ahead of its general digital release:

Whether you’re drawn to the intricacy of progressive metal, the beauty of cultural fusion, or simply the art of storytelling through music, Fomalhaut’s journey is one to follow.

Fomalhaut is an independent band that proudly releases music under their own record label, “Progapanda”.

Progapanda (Prog: a Panda), is more than just a label, it also serves as a podcast dedicated to introducing progressive rock and metal to Chinese-speaking audiences. Through this platform, the members behind Fomalhaut aim to celebrate the genre’s rich diversity and connect with fans and creators alike.

About the Author

Dario

Co-Founder of The Progspace - Dario discovered the world of Prog upon hearing "Shine on you crazy diamond" for the first time at the tender age of 12 around the turn of the millennium. Coming from a musical family and brought up with classical music, this seemed to be the logical next step. Attended the school of www.progulus.com from 2002, delving into both directions: catching up with the history of already more than 30 years of progressive music as well as always staying up to date with the newest prog sounds. He loves meeting like-minded people and enjoying live music at a concert somewhere in Europe.
