Introducing The Aurora Project, 6th band at our 10th Anniversary show
The Netherlands has long been home to an impressive progressive rock and metal scene, and among the bands that represent this consistently it is The Aurora Project.
Formed in 1998 in Katwijk, the six piece has spent more than two decades crafting ambitious concept albums, blending atmospheric progressive rock with metal influences, emotional songwriting and cinematic storytelling.
Their debut album, “Unspoken Words” (2005), received critical acclaim. Then followed up with “Shadow Border” (2009) and “Selling The Aggression” (2013), which explored societal changes brought by the internet and earned rave reviews.
The band took a break after the sudden passing of rhythm guitarist and lyricist Marc Vooijs in 2014. Deciding not to replace Marc, they based the new album on his ideas, shifting their sound to a more progressive rock style with keyboards and bass filling the void.
After a two-year hiatus, The Aurora Project returned with their fourth album, “World of Grey” (2016), dealing with themes of control, repression, and the loss of freedom.
As the local Dutch band on this year’s bill, The Aurora Project are a fitting addition to The Progspace 10th Anniversary Show. They have built a strong reputation within the Dutch progressive community through acclaimed releases and memorable live performances, sharing stages with acts such as Riverside and Threshold while also appearing at ProgPower Europe.
Following a nine year gap between studio albums, the band returned in 2025 with “EVOS12“, the first chapter of an ambitious new sci fi concept. “EVOS12” is the first chapter of a two album concept that follows humanity after the Dronewars, exploring themes of oppression, lost ideals and hope through the parallel stories of a survivor on Earth and a young genius on the distant moon Welda.
Like its predecessors, the album combines intricate compositions with a strong narrative, proving that The Aurora Project continue to evolve while staying true to the melodic and immersive sound that has earned them a loyal following. The band is currently working on the finishing touches on their next album and second chapter of this story.
Expect soaring melodies, dynamic songwriting and an emotional live performance from one of the Netherlands’ most respected progressive rock bands.
