Introducing Persefone, first headliner of The Progspace 10th Anniversary show
Andorra is a beautiful small country perched on the middle of the stunning Pyrenees mountains (between Spain and France). It is not a country most people associate with progressive death metal, but Persefone has put the tiny country in the world map of excellency in progressive metal.
For more than two decades, Persefone have built one of the most technically ambitious catalogues in modern progressive death metal, fusing extreme metal aggression with melodic and cinematic songwriting. Albums like “Spiritual Migration“(2014) and “Metanoia” (2022) pushed the band into a sound that sits comfortably alongside the genre’s most respected acts, while never losing the spiritual and emotional core, the mindblowing technical abilities and superb energy on stage.
One of the elements that make Persefone stand apart from most extreme metal bands is their lyrical themes. The albums live on their own concept work, but the thread running through all of them is about spirituality and self knowledge rather than the genre’s usual fixation on darkness.
Early records like “Truth Inside the Shades” (2004) deals with death, mourning and soul’s afflictions. But from “Spiritual Migration” (2014) onward the band shifted toward themes of awakening, inner transformation, and humanity’s connection to something larger than itself. “Aathma” (2017) explores the idea that all souls share one essence, “Metanoia” (2022) (watch our interview with Moe here) goes around themes about deep internal change, and even “Shin-Ken” (2009), conceptually rooted in Japanese Samurai philosophy, follows the thread talking about discipline and the self.
Their latest EP “Lingua Ignota, Pt. I” (2024) solidifies the same lyrical thread, with the title-song concept exploring an ever-present, organic form of communication between all living things that exists entirely outside of any vocabulary, intellectual constructs, and societal values. A “hidden language” (term originally coined by Hildegard von Bingen).
It is a very rare thing to find a technical progressive death metal band, writing lyrics about this level of introspection, inner growth and deep spiritual subjects. Add to this the deeply cinematic atmospheres, subtle beautiful melodies and the powerful game between growls and clean vocals. All this make Persefone a band that feels way different and superior in many levels within the over-crowded subgenre.

Persefone reached new heights with “Live in Andorra” (2025), recorded at an special one-off orchestral performance at the National Auditorium of Andorra. The band was joined onstage by “L’Orquestra Nacional Clàssica d’Andorra” (National Orchestra of Andorra), and elevating their already complex material to an entire new level.
Choosing them as one of the headliners for our 10th anniversary show was not a difficult decision. Persefone represent something we have stood for since day one: real excellence in progressive metal does not require a major scene, a major label, or a major country. It requires a solid vision and identity and a major drive to create the best music possible using their own creative power, artistry and spirituality. Persefone have these in abundance.
For new listeners, start with ‘Kusanagi‘, ‘Katabasis‘, ‘Leap of Faith‘ or ‘Merkabah‘, then go discover what “Live in Andorra” does to those same songs. Long time fans already know what is coming. New listeners are in for a serious introduction to one of the genre’s most underrated bands.
We cannot think of a better way to celebrate ten years of championing bands like them. Persefone is headlining our 10th Anniversary Show on Saturday, November 28th at CPUNT in Hoofddorp, Netherlands.
