There is a lot to unpack in this album, but that makes it all the more rewarding and amazing to listen to. It’s a more than worthy addition to an impressive streak of albums.

Sleep Token are still amazing at creating an experience with their music. Whenever I listen to them, I tend to lose myself in the soundscape that they craft in front of me.

I’m convinced at this point that Cult of Luna simply is not capable of writing bad music. While it’s shorter than a full-length album, it is still able to captivate me, and I cannot wait to see what they come up with on the other side of this midpoint.

“These Are Not Your Dreams” consists of three parts that each introduces new things to the sound of Sleepmakeswaves. It sounds like a statement that says “we will never stop evolving”, and that is a beautiful thing.

“A Dawn to Fear” feels like one of those albums that you just lean back and enjoy. There are moments that makes you want to headbang, there are moments where you want to hold up a lighter, and there are moments that make you wonder if two different bands were working on this album. Together, all of these moments form an album that is a joy to listen to.

If you’re in this situation, what do you do. It’s been 13 years, you have a very excited and devoted fanbase, rumors that the new album was in the works circulated for years, and the hype soared when it was announced. How are you possibly going to be able to live up to the expectations? Well, if you’re Tool, just doing your own thing is more than enough.

“Echoes of Existence” raises some very interesting and serious moral questions that challenge the listener, as well as exploring issues that today’s society, a lot of times, purposely avoids facing. These questions and issues are wrapped in solid musicianship, which makes for a captivating listen.

While the album does have its standout moments, as a whole it misses the mark for me. I always appreciate bands thinking outside the box and trying to build upon their sound to create something fresh, but the great moments are few and far between. However, the great moments are great, and Lost in Kiev’s talent still shines through. It is by no means a bad album with regards to musical craftsmanship.

Valence manage to make an extremely intriguing piece of instrumental metal. The individual performances are all stellar; the music never gets boring! It’s a very well-crafted and substantial experience, and if you are a fan of bands like Scale the Summit and Between the Buried and Me, Valence will be right up your alley. 4,5/5 ★

With this release, Astronoid have taken the next step in refining their sound. Not necessarily for better or worse, that would depend on who you ask, but personally I rate this album above the former. I very much enjoy these new elements in their music. All in all, this is a step up for Astronoid, and I’m very excited to see where this band is going!

Although some parts of the album can sound a little too one-dimensional for my taste at times, it never felt like an explicitly boring listen. It doesn’t always hit the mark but when it does, it does it well, much thanks to Mikko’s vocal performance. It’s an interesting, emotional listen that spans multiple genres.

In 2018 we had an extraordinary number of quality releases, a real feast for all progressive music fans and lovers. As our team grew up, this list is a tad longer than before and it reflects very well how many releases were top of the top on so many diverse progressive genres mashups or combinations, or if you prefer, progressive sub-genres. From melodic to djent to doom to prog-death to piano-chamber music. There’s a bit for everyone! These are the favorites of our Progspace crew – our very personal short “best of” list, if you want – purely subjective, of course!

From the clear mixing of styles, even going into a fusion jazz club sort of vibe, the soaring guitar work, the signature Plini-solos. It has everything. 4★ /Sander
