A Somerset Parade – Carcosa

It took me a few listens to appreciate the entirety of this album. It is creepy, angry, and melodic with a gothic concept to boot. The band isn’t afraid to experiment and have the capacity to do that. Who knows what will be in store for them, but I for one can’t wait to see what that is.

Caligula’s Horse – Charcoal Grace

January is certainly serving up some sumptuous fruits, and this is another strong contender for my AOTY 2024. In these terrible times (was it not ever thus) where news is rarely good, releases such as this sustain me. They help to hold back pessimistic thoughts and long may it continue. The song writing is sublime, the execution flawless, and the urge to play the whole thing over again is inescapable.

Voyager – Fearless in Love

“Fearless in Love” is a skillfully well-balanced album, especially at this specific point in Voyager’s evolution. It is neither a departure from what their loyal fans know and love (especially using their more recent work as baseline), nor is it restrictive for newer fans who don’t necessarily stem from a metal background. It is listenable, explorable, palatable, but in no way does it take away from what the band stands for. Not an easy balance to strike, in my opinion. If music could be seen in colors, this album—and I’d say Voyager in general—would span the whole rainbow. And I think prog needs that in the mix.

Voyager – Colours in the Sun

Voyager’s “Colours in the Sun” is definitely a step-up in their discography in terms of production and sound mixing, as well as writing and having fun with the many yet different elements that create the very unique Voyager sound. It is a grower, you really get how many beautiful details it has by listening to it several times, and it won’t disappoint you, except that is too short! 4/5★ Van

Poem, Damnations Day and White Walls Tour Review

Poem has the professionalism, stage presence, talent, and songwriting skills of a much bigger act, and I can only hope that festival organizers and the progressive community will give them the attention they deserve in the future. On the way out of the venue there were a lot of smiling faces and happy audience members, all in all, a night to remember.

Tour review: Malina 2017 – Leprous, Agent Fresco, Alithia and Astrosaur

With all the surprises, strong support (or co-headliner) acts and a Leprous performance that seemed out of this world, the “Malina” tour ranks on the top of the list of 2017, for some (like our Munich reviewer Dario!) even leaving behind the likes of the Ayreon Universe shows and Shattered Fortress, both among the highlights of the concerts roster of 2017 in Europe. Leprous are superstars, and deservedly so.
